The significance of super-fast storage systems is escalating with the progress in big data and IoT. The coming years are focusing on developing high capacity SSDs at a lower cost. We have earlier discussed researches and advancements happening with SSDs that are set to meet the enhanced application demands.

Both consumer and enterprise SSDs are capable of delivering greater storage at superior speeds with the 4th and 5th generation SAS and PCIe®/NVMe storage protocol. SAS 4.0 offers a speed of 24GT/s which can be considered on par with NVMe SSDs. While NVMe derives from a consumer lineage, SAS started off directly for enterprises.

The SSD market is expected to take a giant leap in 2020 with the increased demand for cloud applications and the improvement in technology like 5G connectivity. Cloud applications are the base of future ever-developing data storage and handling. The cloud system offers endless opportunities with high scalability and low latency, and ephemeral computing instances that offer faster throughput while not preserving the data locally. High capacity SSDs support these functionalities at their best.

Moreover, high capacity SSDs are also used for smart devices, GPS systems, and other wireless technologies, that require real-time data streaming. It is essential to have the support of reliable, high capacity systems, which promote quick and efficient data transfer.

Some of these SSDs include SATA, SAS, U.2/U.3, and M.2 types. The first three use connectors like SATA, SAS, and SFF8639, supporting data transfer up to 4 lane, and are hot-pluggable. For U.2 /U.3 SSDs, we have developed Gen 5 connector solutions. The M.2 SSDs use PCI SIG standard M.2 connectors, which support up to 4 lane data transfer but are not hot-pluggable.

Amphenol offers a wide range of solutions to support different types of SSD, as we mentioned in earlier articles. Besides we also offer Mini Cool Edge 0.60mm connectors and Double Density Cool Edge connectors from our Cool Edge line, which offer superior performance in a compact package making them an ideal option for high-speed SSDs. EDSFF SSD, which is the latest trend in the industry uses these Mini Cool Edge connectors that provide up to 16 lane data transfer rates and are hot-pluggable. We have all mounting orientation available for the same. We also have solutions that are Gen 5 ready!
